DR MIKE KAMARA & DR BARTON SMITH
Joondalup Obstetrics and Gynaecology Group
Dr Mike Kamara and Dr Barton Smith are the faces behind Joondalup Obstetrics and Gynaecology Group. We are a family practice, best known for excellence in women’s health care in the northern suburbs.
Meet Dr Mike Kamara
I had the privilege of growing up in a medical home learning the virtues of service from the cradle as they say.
I convinced my father to let me see a caesarean delivery at 7 and I guess the rest was history.
In medical school I briefly toyed with the idea of doing internal medicine but after exposure to maternity and gynaecology I knew I couldn’t really do anything else and feel fulfilled.
There was just something about the amazing privilege of helping to safely bring a new live/lives into the world and the care afterwards that I knew I had to be a part of.
Over the last 11 years of training and consulting, I have worked in a number of large and small hospitals in Western Australia and in New South Wales.
Currently I do all my private work at Joondalup Private Hospital (Obstetrics and gynaecology).
I also hold public consultant positions at Joondalup Health Campus and at Fiona Stanley Hospital
I decided to go into private practice in 2021. I felt that I would best be able to provide consistent and continued care to my patients in the private setting.
One of the major consumer concerns in obstetrics has been the lack of continuity of care .
Having a dedicated care giver/team leads to better outcomes for mothers and babies as well as satisfaction from the families.
I enjoy getting to know my patients well and seeing them through their journey.
Meet Dr Barton Smith
Bart wanted to be a doctor from a very young age, but became a geologist first. After ten years, he decided it was now or never, enrolled in medical school, and has loved every minute of it.
Helping women during pregnancy and birth is such a rewarding profession. The magic of childbirth inspired Bart to pursue this path as a young doctor, and the opportunity to help women with their own unique journey inspires him every day. He aims to make childbirth as friendly as possible, tailored to suit each individual as best he can.
Outside of medicine, Bart is very busy with six kids of his own, playing guitar in a band, coaching kids sports, gardening and always renovating. He occasionally freelances as a geologist, and loves talking about volcanoes, and human evolution. He loves researching new ways to make pregnancy care better, and is an avid reader of medical journals.
I started working in obstetrics in 2011, and have worked in Perth Metro and country hospitals all over the state since then. I currently work both publicly and privately at Joondalup Hospital. The option of going private gives women and their families more flexibility, a tailored birth experience, one-on-one care, and access to modern facilities in a first class centre. Giving birth can be anxious and even frightening, especially for first time mothers. A familiar face is important for building trust, and being able to navigate through being a Mum and bringing a baby into the world.
Meet Dr Jennifer Weishaupt
Born in Switzerland and raised in South Africa, I earned my Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in Johannesburg. My passion for women’s health advocacy was ignited during my time as a junior doctor, working with sexual assault victims in busy emergency departments.
Over the past 17 years, I have remained deeply committed to creating a patient-centric, respectful, and discreet healthcare environment for women-an approach I take great pride in.
My broad gynaecological training enables me to offer comprehensive, holistic care tailored to every stage of a woman’s life.
I completed my Obstetrics and Gynaecology fellowship training across several leading hospitals in New South Wales, including Nepean, Orange, Westmead, and Liverpool Hospitals, and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
I then undertook advanced training in gynaecological oncology at the prestigious Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Sydney, followed by an additional fellowship year focused on robotic and gynaecological oncology surgery at Royal Adelaide and St Andrew’s Hospitals in Adelaide, South Australia, completed in 2020. I currently hold public appointments at Fiona Stanley Hospital and Joondalup Health Campus in Western Australia.
In 2025, I transitioned the core focus of my practice to private, office-based general gynaecology. Drawing on a broad and extensive gynaecological background, I bring depth and precision to both clinical care and surgical management in gynaecology. I have developed a specialised niche offering prompt, unhurried, and comprehensive consultations. My focus is on providing clear, accessible explanations to women seeking reassurance and answers, and on empowering them through collaborative, informed treatment planning.
With experience across both routine and high-risk pregnancies, I also provide personalised family planning and reproductive health services tailored to the diverse needs of the Joondalup community. I am a passionate advocate for gynaecologic oncology survivorship, sexual health, and birth trauma recovery, and remain committed to improving access to sensitive, inclusive care for LGBTQ+ individuals.
